About me
From a young age, I’ve been captivated by food and culture—the rich blend of flavours, spices, and cuisines from different corners of the world. To me, food is far more than just a meal; it's a symbol of love, connection, history and culture.
I vividly remember the days when my mum would prepare her famous harissa avocado sandwich for my school lunch (on the days I actually stayed at school until lunch). That sandwich was a staple for me, so much so that my friends would often tease me about eating my harissa avocado sandwich every day.
Now living in Australia, that childhood memory of the taste of harissa still lingers in my mind. Despite searching day and night for the perfect harissa, I couldn’t find one that truly captured the essence of what I remembered. So, I took matters into my own hands and decided to make it myself.
I spent months researching, diving deep into the world of spices, and dedicating endless hours experimenting in the kitchen. I meticulously sourced the finest ingredients, determined to craft a recipe that not only met but exceeded the high standards I set for myself. Every jar was a step closer to recreating that perfect flavour, the one that took me back to those cherished moments at the family table.
And now, years later, I've come full circle—launching my own brand, selling harissa. It’s funny how life works out, and I guess it’s true what they say: our past is a part of our future.
What is Harissa?
Harissa is a vibrant and flavourful chilli paste that originates from North Africa, particularly Tunisia. It has become a staple in North African and Middle Eastern cuisines, celebrated for its bold, smoky, and spicy profile. Harissa's versatility and unique taste have made it increasingly popular in kitchens around the world, finding its way into a variety of dishes from sauces and marinades to soups and stews.
History and Origin
The exact origins of harissa are somewhat debated, but it is widely believed to have been developed in Tunisia, where it is a crucial part of the local cuisine. The name "harissa" comes from the Arabic word "harasa," which means "to crush or pound," referring to the method of making the paste by grinding the ingredients together.
Ingredients
Traditional harissa is made from a blend of dried red chilies, garlic, olive oil, and a variety of spices, such as cumin, coriander, and caraway seeds. Some versions include tomatoes or bell peppers to add sweetness and depth. The specific combination of ingredients can vary greatly, resulting in different flavour profiles ranging from very hot to mildly spicy.
Health Benefits
Harissa is not just flavourful but also offers several health benefits. It is typically made with all-natural ingredients, many of which are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds. Chillies, for example, are a good source of vitamins A and C which has been linked to various health benefits, including pain relief and improved metabolism.
The Harissa Avocado Sandwich that changed everything
When I was young, rushing out the door for school, there was always one thing that brought me comfort: the avocado Harissa sandwich my mom would make for my lunch. She’d prepare it in the early hours, wrapping it tightly in cling wrap, not knowing then how much meaning she was wrapping into that simple sandwich. By the time lunch rolled around, the bread would be warm and slightly soggy, the avocado and Harissa blending into something almost messy—but it didn’t matter. I loved it, exactly as it was.
I remember opening my lunch, the unmistakable aroma of Harissa hitting me, and my friends laughing at my unchanging choice, day after day, year after year. "Another Harissa sandwich?" they’d joke. To me, that sandwich was home; it was love, warmth, and the familiar taste of comfort.
Now, looking back, I realise that those lunches were more than just school day routines. Here I am, years later, with my own line of Harissa, sharing the flavours I grew up with, spreading a piece of my story with every jar. Who would have thought that something as simple as a sandwich would circle back to me, becoming not only a product but a mission, a purpose, and a way of life? The Universe has a funny way of leaving breadcrumbs from the future, little hints you don’t understand until much later.
From that warm, cling-wrapped sandwich, I learned something valuable: the little things you barely notice—the soggy bread, the lunch break—are often the things that shape you. That sandwich was just a sandwich…until it wasn’t. It became a memory, a spark, a vision that grew into something greater than I’d ever imagined.
And one day, I’ll pass this avocado Harissa sandwich on to my kids, a simple tradition wrapped in layers of meaning. Who knows what the future holds? For now, I’ll savour the journey and the lessons from my past. After all, it all began with one humble sandwich.
The Secret Lab in My Kitchen
After deciding to turn my beloved childhood memory of the avocado harissa sandwich into an actual business, I had no idea what lay ahead. If only I’d known the mess—and the madness—I was about to unleash. How do you even begin? Where do you start? I suppose, like anything in life, you just figure it out as you go along. So, that’s exactly what I did.
The research began, and the search for ingredients took me down endless aisles, through spice markets, and onto online forums. Soon, my kitchen transformed into a laboratory.
I didn't know much about formulations—hell, I didn't even know what a “formulation” really was. But I knew flavours, and I had a feeling for what I wanted.
The blending, mixing, and jarring became my daily routine. I scribbled down every single step, trying to make sense of what worked and what didn’t: measurements, dates, grams of every spice, and notes on flavour adjustments. My kitchen became a battlefield of glass jars filled with harissa in various shades of red. I must have gone through enough chilies to feed a small village, and my eyes burned from the heat no matter how many windows I opened. The tears, the mess, the stains—each batch left a mark on my countertops and on my memory.
And yet, every jar I tasted was… just okay. Not bad, but not the ‘wow’ I was chasing. For months, I was consumed by this pursuit, feeling like I was always so close, but never quite there. Friends thought I was crazy, and my kitchen looked like it belonged to a mad scientist. But I couldn’t stop.
Then, one day, after countless failed experiments and way too much chilli in my system, something finally clicked. The recipe I’d been searching for was in front of me—the perfect blend of smoky, spicy, and vibrant. I went from “meh” to “wow” with just one taste, and I knew I had something special.
This journey wasn’t just about creating a sauce; it taught me something deeper. I realised that no matter how far off the goal seems, the only way forward is to keep going, step by step, batch by batch. Success isn't always a straight line, and often the path is unclear. But the lessons are there, hidden in the mess, waiting for you to discover them.
Now, with my harissa in hand, I had more than a product—I had a piece of my past, my hard work, and my resilience, all jarred up and ready to share with the world.
