Truffle Harissa Smashed Avocado on Toast

We know what you’re thinking. “It’s just smashed avo.” And yes, technically it is. But stir a teaspoon of Truffle Harissa through your avocado and suddenly it’s the best thing you’ve eaten all week.

The earthiness of the truffle cuts through the richness of the avocado in a way that genuinely shouldn’t work this well. Add a poached egg on top and you’ve got a breakfast that people will ask you about for days. And it takes ten minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1–2 tsp Dalia’s Pantry Truffle Harissa
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • Salt & flaky sea salt to taste
  • 4 thick slices sourdough bread
  • 2 eggs, poached or fried (optional but highly recommended)
  • Fresh chilli, thinly sliced
  • Fresh coriander or micro herbs to garnish
  • Extra virgin olive oil to drizzle

How to Make It

1

Toast the sourdough until golden and crispy. The bread needs to be sturdy enough to hold the avocado without going soggy.

2

Halve the avocados, remove the stone and scoop the flesh into a bowl. Add the lemon juice, garlic and a generous pinch of salt. Smash with a fork to your preferred texture — we like it chunky.

3

Stir through the Truffle Harissa. Taste and adjust — add more harissa if you want more depth, more lemon if you want more brightness.

4

Pile the smashed avocado generously onto the toast. Don’t be shy — this is not the time for restraint.

5

Top with a poached or fried egg if using. Scatter with fresh chilli, coriander and a drizzle of olive oil. Finish with a pinch of flaky sea salt.

Tips for the perfect smashed avo

Choose ripe avocados. Press gently — they should give slightly. Too firm and they won’t smash properly, too soft and they’ll be brown inside.

Don’t over-smash. Chunky is better than smooth for texture and visual appeal.

Season generously. Avocado needs more salt than you think. Flaky sea salt on top makes a real difference.

Start with less harissa. You can always add more but you can’t take it away. Start with 1 tsp and taste as you go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make the smashed avo ahead of time?
It’s best made fresh — avocado browns quickly once cut. If you need to prep ahead, add extra lemon juice and press cling wrap directly onto the surface to slow browning.

Is this recipe vegan?
Yes — just skip the egg. The smashed avo with Truffle Harissa is completely vegan and absolutely delicious on its own.

What can I use instead of sourdough?
Any sturdy bread works — rye, wholegrain or a thick white toast. Avoid soft sandwich bread as it won’t hold the weight of the avocado.

How much Truffle Harissa should I use?
Start with 1 teaspoon and taste. The truffle flavour is bold so a little goes a long way. Most people end up using 1–2 tsp per 2 avocados.
